Unoccupied Property Insurance
A standard home insurance is not suitable for a domestic property that is unoccupied.
Many of the standard features of home insurance or landlords insurance will be invalid or cover significantly reduced if the property is unoccupied for a significant period. This is normally after 30 days of it being unoccupied. Unoccupied property insurance is specifically for this situation.
Property owners should be aware that most household insurance companies will drastically reduce cover for empty properties. Important covers such as escape of water, theft, malicious damage are very often excluded.
WE WOULD RECOMMEND:
Either drain down the water system in the home or ensure the heating is kept on at a minimum temperature of 15 degrees C. This will reduce the risk of burst pipes caused by freezing water. It would also be prudent to arrange regular inspections. You should keep a written record of each inspection internal and external noting down the date and time of visit. This will help you in the event of a claim proving to an insurer that you are taking care of the property.
